This is a cute Mata Ortiz Miniature Pot signed by artist Adriana Villalba de Andrew. It measures approx 2 in tall by 2 in across, with a 1.25 in opening. It is tan clay with a tan/gray slip, and brown/red graphics. The signature on this pottery piece is at the bottom of the graphics, instead of on the very bottom of the pottery.
Mata Ortiz pottery, also known as Casas Grandes pottery, is one of the finest ceramics in the world. Inspired by the Paquime', Casas Grandes ceramics, the potters of Mata Ortiz create contemporary works of art, often incorporating Mimbres designs shared by the Southwest, Native American cultures.
These pots are called ollas, or coiled pots. They are hand painted using natures own canvas and materials, and never kiln fired (open pit firing is the technique used). They are created entirely by hand so there are slight variances in size or symmetry.
These pieces are for ornamental use only, they are not intended to be used as water or food containers. {sku 1473}
